Jeff Fimreite

Candidate, La Crosse County Board of Supervisors, District 21

I want to sincerely thank everyone who reached out with questions or took the time to respond to my post. It was truly encouraging to hear your support and to learn more about the issues that matter most to you. I also wanted to take this opportunity to help clarify the role of a county board supervisor and why District 21 is especially important, particularly because it surrounds Lake Onalaska and plays a key role in decisions that impact the lake and our surrounding communities.

When I was first asked to run for County Board, I’ll admit it ,  I had to Google what a County Supervisor actually does. Like many people, I assumed most of the big decisions happened in Madison or Washington. What I’ve learned since is that county government quietly shapes much of what we rely on every day. It may not come with a spotlight or a theme song, but it’s where practical problem‑solving actually happens.

Strong communities aren’t built by accident. They come from responsible decision‑making and careful use of taxpayer dollars. That belief is what drives my decision to run for the La Crosse County Board and represent District 21 with common sense, transparency, and respect.

The County Board sets policy, approves budgets, and oversees essential services like public health, human services, infrastructure, emergency management, and land use planning. These decisions influence property taxes, road conditions, public safety, housing, and how responsibly we manage county resources. County government may not always make headlines,  and honestly, if it did, something probably went wrong ,  but its impact is everywhere.

One of its most important responsibilities is stewardship: taking care of what we have today so future generations aren’t left paying the price. That includes protecting Lake Onalaska, one of our region’s greatest environmental, recreational, and economic assets. This work isn’t ideological. It’s about long‑term thinking, local control, and smart investments that protect both our natural resources and our tax base. In other words, it’s the opposite of kicking the can down the road, a move government has perfected over the years.

District 21 has a unique role in this effort. It includes French Island, Brice Prairie, parts of the Towns of Onalaska and Holland, and a section of Holmen. Each community has its own character, but they share infrastructure, shared resources like Lake Onalaska, and county decisions that shape growth and quality of life.

Representing District 21 means listening to local voices, respecting different perspectives, and recognizing that one‑size‑fits‑all solutions rarely work. It also means working with people who don’t always agree and finding common ground ,  even if the only thing everyone agrees on is that winter lasts too long. Good leadership balances growth with preservation, supports families and seniors, and protects property owners while planning responsibly for the future.

My approach is grounded in experience, not politics. With more than 20 years in administrative leadership, I’ve worked extensively with budgeting, policy development, and long‑range planning. I’ve overseen major facilities projects and managed public resources where fiscal discipline and accountability weren’t optional, they were required. That experience has shaped my belief that government should be efficient, responsive, and focused on outcomes, not drama.

County leadership should be steady and service‑oriented. It should prioritize essential services, respect taxpayers, and focus on the basics: safe communities, strong infrastructure, responsible land use, and sound financial planning. As a County Supervisor, I would represent District 21 with integrity, advocate for Lake Onalaska through responsible stewardship, and help ensure county decisions are transparent, fiscally responsible, and grounded in common sense.

I’m not running to be a politician. I’m running to be a responsible voice for our community,  someone who believes local government works best when it is practical, accountable, and focused on protecting what matters most.

If elected as a County Supervisor, I would represent District 21 with integrity, advocate for Lake Onalaska through responsible stewardship, and help ensure county decisions are transparent, fiscally responsible, and grounded in common sense.
