Jeff Fimreite
Candidate, La Crosse County Board of Supervisors, District 21
With Dave Balduzzi retiring from the County Board, and with his endorsement, I have decided to run for the District 21 seat on the La Crosse County Board of Supervisors. I believe serving on the County Board will strengthen our ability to protect Lake Onalaska and move important projects forward. Local government should be aligned with the work our community is already doing, not standing on the sidelines.
I am non‑partisan and not a politician. I am someone who believes in common sense, collaboration, and doing the work. I care deeply about this community, its families, its seniors, its natural resources, and its future. I also believe taxpayers deserve responsible, transparent financial stewardship. When people invest their hard‑earned dollars into county government, they should be able to see that investment come back to them in the form of strong neighborhoods, safe communities, well‑maintained infrastructure, and services that actually work.
I grew up not far from here, spending my childhood boating and fishing on the Mississippi River. Some of my earliest memories are of long summer days on the water, learning patience with a fishing rod in my hands, inter tubing with friends, watching birds overhead, and understanding, without anyone needing to explain it, that this river and these lakes were something special.
That connection to the outdoors didn’t happen by accident. My dad is a retired conservationist, and from him I learned the importance of protecting natural resources, not just enjoying them, but taking responsibility for them. He taught me that conservation isn’t about politics; it’s about stewardship, respect, and ensuring the land and water are healthier tomorrow than they were yesterday.
My mom was a teacher, and from her I learned the value of service, patience, and investing in people. She believed deeply in community, education, and doing what is right even when it isn’t easy. Those lessons, caring for others and planning for the future, have shaped every part of my life.
Those early experiences were more than recreation. They shaped my values. They taught me respect for the environment, appreciation for community, and the importance of taking care of what we’ve been given so it remains here for the next generation.
As many of you know, Lake Onalaska is one of my deepest passions. It is critical to our area for so many reasons. The tourism it brings supports local businesses and jobs, but even more importantly, the lake is a vital habitat for countless species of birds, fish, and wildlife. It is part of the identity of District 21 and our entire region.
Unfortunately, Lake Onalaska has been neglected for far too long. And many residents are asking a fair question: If we’ve been investing in county government year after year, why aren’t we seeing more progress on the issues that matter most to families and neighborhoods?
That is why I didn’t just talk about caring for this place, I got involved. I currently serve as a board member of the Lake Onalaska Rehabilitation Coalition and am a member of Sustain Our Rivers, the Lake Onalaska Protection and Rehabilitation District, and the Brice Prairie Conservation Association. Through this work, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when communities step up and what becomes possible when people work together.
Through these orginizations, we have built strong partnerships with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Wisconsin DNR. These relationships matter because they are how real progress happens. But we also need county leadership that ensures taxpayer dollars are used wisely, transparently, and in ways that strengthen our community, supporting families, improving services, and investing in the long‑term health of our region.
I want future generations to have the same opportunities I had, to learn on the water, to respect the land, and to feel proud of the place they call home. That is why I am running.
